April 27, 2009 – The national playoffs caused some changes in the men’s DII Top 25 this week, but the rankings also proved to be a solid indicator of who would win what.

In the 12 elimination games (not counting the consolation matches) the team ranked higher by ERugbyNews won 9, and lost three. Thos upsets were #7 Arizona State over #4 Utah Valley, and #19 Georgetown over #17 Maine, and #1 Cal Maritime.

Obviously our #1 was not a #1, and we woefully underestimated Georgetown. But the rest did well.

Here’s what we saw following the playoffs:
Miami is as good as we’ve said all year, and dominated. They jump from #3 to #1.

Middlebury is outstanding, but stay at #2 simply because Miami crushed their opponents a little bit more.

Wisconsin is also very strong and move to #3. As a result, we look back at the Midwest playoffs. St. John’s pushed Miami pretty close and Kent Sate, while inconsistent through the season, pushed Wisconsin pretty close. They get a ride into the Top 25 on the coattails of their local competition.

Georgetown moves up to #4. This wasn’t an automatic. But the other teams involved just made it tough to pick anyone else. ASU beat Utah Valey, which beach Salisbury, which only lost to Wisconsin by two. It’s all very, very close from #4 to #9, and it will be interesting to see how the Big Four settles it all.
