May 6, 2009 – Not surprisingly, Penn State moves to #1 after their demolition of Stanford Saturday in Palo Alto.

The Nittany Lions just dominated late, and while some might grumble about Stanford’s yellow cards in terms of allowing Penn State to run away with it, Penn State was going to win comfortably anyway.

Few other changes. Brown moves up from #4 to #3 and Navy drops down based on their semifinal performances. Army, Chico State, BYU, New Mexico, Northern Iowa and Oregon hold firm in the rest of the Top 10. Oregon was unlucky not to be in the national playoffs and were good enough to be there.

The up-and-down Virginia ended on something of an up with a tough performance against Brown in the quarterfinals. As we saw, Brown are quite the rugby team and Virginia deserver their ranking.

Moving up is Eastern Illinois. They are idle in the spring and so drop down, but now we revisit the fact they beat, handily, North Carolina, West Chester and Clemson. So they go to #12. Again, it would be nice if Eastern Illinois’ coaching staff had taken a different tack with their program – using their varsity status to reach out to other good programs and their administration rather than creating an island unto themselves. We at ERugbyNews think the EIU players could benefit from being exposed to better rugby, and someone other than their present head coach teaching them. If they did, they could be top 5.

Cal moves up one spot based on their overall close losses with top Pacific Coast teams. Note that the PCRFU has five teams in the top 20.

We won’t expand the Top 20 to 25. There just aren’t the teams who deserve to be there … yet.

Thanks to all the coaches and parents and players who helped us cover DI women’s rugby, and congratulations to Penn State.
