April 21, 2009 – The ERugbyNews Women’s DI Top 25 has become a Top 20. After studying the results of the teams involved and on the bubble we made the tough decision to jettison five teams, and not to admit anymore.

We could have searched around for programs that had come close to playoff glory; we found one in Clemson. West Chester didn’t do enough (had they won their triple-overtime game against UCLA then they would have come up).

So it’s really a Top 21, with Clemson and Florida (who split their season series) tied at #20.

In the upper echelon, we felt we called it right. Teams #1-#4, Stanford, Penn State, Navy and Brown all won two games in the national playoffs and will be in the national semis again (second year in a row). Who are the next four? Logically you’d expect them to be the teams that won opening round playoff games but lost in the quarters. However we didn’t move Virginia up that far – Uva has been too inconsistent (injuries for sure) and didn’t bowl us over enough for us to think that New Mexico (who scored more tries than Chico State but lost by two) and Northern Iowa (a try shy of BYU) were lesser.

Also don’t forget Oregon, which was just barely denied a spot at the national playoffs – they only lost one league or playoff game all season and were impressive all season. They remain in the Top 10.

North Carolina moves up, as does Virginia, and because of that Vassar, who won the Beast of the East, drops down. Dartmouth, after a very poor playoff, is fortunate to stay in the Top 20.

There will be one more update, when we finalize the top ranking. We could easily see the top four shuffle around, and as a result possibly some changes might come in the next four to six teams. Our call? We rank Stanford #1, but we’re not sure they will be there come May 4.
