March 25, 2009 – Well it was a very interesting week in women’s DI college rugby. Here’s what happened: The Mid-Atlantic playoffs started, and as expected Navy, Virginia, West Chester, and Penn State all won.
Of those, Navy, Virginia and Penn State are all in the top ten. The inconsistent West Chester aren’t even in the Top 25. They could be, and if they perform well even in a losing cause this coming weekend, they probably will be.
On the left coast, Chico State established their quality by beating Oregon and BYU. The Cougars looked good, but not quite as astounding as last season. We will see. Tough for poor Oregon, who got slammed with the flu last season. They’ve got to be wondering when they, as Pacific Northwest champions, get to host a playoff game.
And some top New England teams got moving. Dartmouth toured California, losing to Stanford and the SF Fog, but beating Cal by five. Brown traveled south this weekend to Virginia, and beat UVa Tuesday.
Note, though, how Stanford took the challenge of Dartmouth and send them packing 52-5. Note also that many of the Stanford starting XV were their subs. All their regular bench-sitters started. And the really scary thing? Jess Watkins, back from the 7s World Cup (and approved as eligible to play by USA Rugby) played fullback and got clued back into playing for her school side. The addition of Watkins to a very strong Stanford outfit is scary indeed.
Navy jumps over idle Army to take #1, with Stanford at their heels. Brown, back on the field and performing well, move up as well.
