March 31, 2009 – With their 66-20 win over #6 Utah, BYU retains their #1 ranking going into the national playoff season. The Cougars remain there in part because their challengers, Cal, who could well have been #1 at any time in the last few weeks, lost to UBC in Vancouver.

There was some movement in the Top 25, however. Penn State jumps from #7 to #4 after an impressive Mid-Atlantic playoff weekend. San Diego State slips from #4 to #5 after an unconvincing win over #24 Arizona. SD State rested some starters, but still get dinged.

Navy, who upset higher ranked Kutztown in the semis and then pushed Penn State in the MARFU final, moves up seven spots to #7. ERN scouts all say Navy is a much improved side from the fall.

Utah slips two places to #8 chiefly because Penn State and navy move up. Bowling Green edges up a place to #10 after sweeping what is a relatively understrength Midwest territory.

Central Washington slips two points after losing to Cal. Arkansas State moves up one place to #12 after winning their big game against Tennessee, while the aforementioned Kutztown drops three spots to #13.

Colorado State moves up three spots to #20 after beating a very good Denver Barbarians DII team. Arizona is rewarded for their close loss to SD State with a jump from #24 to #21.

Rutgers wins again and moves up, while Virginia Tech drops down from #21 to #24. ERN corrects a mistake from last week, and now has correctly credited North Carolina with a loss to Virginia Tech. This, coupled with Oklahoma’s creditable loss to Air Force 27-24, means North Carolina slips out, and Oklahoma slips in.

It all is still fluid, even for teams that are essentially done playing. Should their league do well, some teams will be moved up. Sacramento State, Washington State and UC Davis have excellent chances to move up or in with playoffs coming. All four remaining West teams are in the Top 25. It’s possible one will drop out after this weekend.
