March 31, 2009 – USA-based referee Chris Draper officiated at the Hong Kong 7s this past weekend, putting the former Cal player in the cauldron of one of the most celebrated rugby tournaments in the world.

Draper was the referee for Kenya’s upset of New Zealand in the quarterfinals.

"As the first American referee in Hong Kong since Jim Russell nearly 20 years ago, this tournament was a fantastic experience, capped with the extraordinary honor of being selected to referee such an important match,” Draper said. "It is truly an honor anytime you are fortunate enough to represent your country. As exciting as this leg of the Circuit has been for me personally, it's the hard work of the nearly 1500 USA Rugby referees across our nation that has made my appearance here even possible."

Draper follows the IRB World Series to Adelaide, where he will once again blow the whistle.

"It's hard to imagine a more exciting way to spend a weekend," he said.
