The Canada U20 Women’s team has named its starting lineup for their opening match of the 2009 Nations Cup in England.

Canada’s first matchup may indeed be their toughest as England are defending champions of the U20 Nations Cup, after winning the competition last year in Oakville, Ontario. Looking to exact vengeance versus England, Canada will attempt to overturn the two losses they suffered on the same day at the 2008 competition.

After landing in the United Kingdom on Monday, the team has spent two days recovering from jet lag and training to prepare for what is shaping up to be a gritty battle today.

“We will take on these nations and look to produce a performance to the best of our abilities,” said de Scossa.

Captaining the Canadians will be Brittany Orr of Fort Macleod, Alb., who also plays for the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge RFC. Vice captain is Ottawa native Jill McLaren, who plays her university rugby with St. Francis Xavier and also club rugby with the Ottawa Irish.

The two will look to lead a young team to an honorable result in their first of four matches at this year’s competition. In just three days time, Canada will face Wales, followed by rivals USA on July 15th before concluding with the final day of rugby on July 18th.

“The key to this tournament is performance,” said de Scossa. “Each time we get together we play we aim to get better. By getting the performance pathway right in technical training, in strength and conditioning, we can work to get the players prepared for performing in a match.”

Notable in the side is 5-11 Tyson Beukeboom, whose dad, Jeff, was a physical defenseman and four-time Stanley Cup winner with the Edmonton Oilers. Beukeboom the younger is also a star hockey player.
