Wales Holds Off Tenacious Canada

Saturday May 30, 2009 in Canada National Team - Men

May 30, 2009 – Canada gave Wales a push but ultimately fell in Saturday’s test match 32-23.

The game was fairly close throughout, with Canada rarely able to pull ahead by more than ten.

Canada led early off a James Pritchard penalty goal, but Wales replied with a very soft try, as a muffed clearance kick gave Chris Czekaj an easy pickup and touchdown.

The teams traded penalty goals and it was 16-9 at halftime. Canada tied it up moments into the second half when Sean Duke scored off a turnover. Pritchard’s conversion made it 16-16.

But Wales re-took the lead when Tom James bulled over. Dan Biggar’s kick made it 23-16.

And from then on it was all about Wales trying to stay a little clear of the tenacious Canadians. Another Biggar kick made it 29-16 before Pat Riordan set up Ed Fairhurst for Canada’s second try. 29-23. One more Bigger penalty sealed it.

For the Canadians it was a big effort, and one that saw them tied 45 minutes into the game. They will rue the muffed clearance kick – shades of their loss to Wales in the 2007 World Cup.

Wales moves on to face the USA in a week.
