January 28, 2008 - OK, so here's the final pitch. Those who are readers of these pages will know that the ERugbyNews parent company is owned by the same organization that owns the USA Sevens, which are to be held in San Diego February 9-10.
We make no apology for that. And I can say with all truth that it doesn't matter. When I say you should go to the USA 7s, it's only because it is an unforgettable rugby event. I said so in 2004 and 2005, and say it even more now that the tournament is at PETCO Park in San Diego.
If you are on the fence. If you are unsure about whether it will really pay off. If you are a huge XVs fan but think 7s is just OK, know this. It's worth it. Go. You'll love it.
There's something about being there. You see world class athletes right up close. The players are friendly and polite. The fans are having a great time. There's a game that will make you slap your head with amazement, and ten minutes later there's another one.
Nothing in rugby in the USA matches the scale, beauty, fun and intensity of the USA 7s. If you go you will know you've been to see something special.
Have you ever been to a major sporting event in the USA, like an NFL or top college football game, or a baseball game? You enjoy yourself, but it's not the game you absolutely love. It's not rugby. And you wonder what it would be like to be at an event where all these people cheering and having a great time also shared something special with you - that they love rugby. That it was rugby being played.
That's what will happen in San Diego.
You ever go to a really exciting rugby event, and then end up at a bar or a restaurant or club later in the day shaking your head, because the game was thrilling and there was this awesome play and you ... but there's no one to talk to about it, because only 3,000 people were there and they've all scattered? And you wish you had a restaurant full of rugby fans with whom you could relive the game? In San Diego you can. There are thousands and thousands of fans, many of whom tour the Gaslamp Quarter after the games are done on Saturday night. They're all seen the games. They all care.
The atmosphere, the level of play, the fact that this is an IRB World Series tournament, the fact that you share this with thousands of fellow fans ... there is really nothing like it.
If you live in or near San Diego, bring a friend, or three.
If it's raining in the morning, tell your friends not to be such pansies and it'll clear up soon enough (it always does).
If you are within any reasonable driving distance of San Diego, there's no reason to miss it.
There are still inexpensive flights available from all over the country.
Go see the USA 7s in San Diego. You won't regret it.
