The 16 teams competing in the USA Club 7s Championships have submitted their rosters and out of the 192 players as many as a quarter have international or professional 7s experience, or were All Americans.
In Pool A Denver is led by former USA 7s and XVs player Justin Stencel, whose long road back from injury has put him in position for many to tout him as an Eagle candidate again. With Stencel is former Kenya forward Teddy Omondi and former All American playmaker Max de Achaval.
There’s plenty of speed on the field, with former All American Dan Murphy and Dewon Reed providing the pace.
Life faced some difficulties getting ready to play, as several younger players were in danger of missing too much summer school time because of the All American tour. But some creative airline ticket juggling allowed them to take their best side, although some of those players will be up early Monday morning for exams.
USA 7s player Tui Osborne, who helped Riverside to two national 7s championships, plays on and coaches a team that includes the ageless Nathan Rogers, the young and promising Cam Dolan, and the buff and experienced Mark Aylor. It’s a team heavy on power, and will need to finishing pace of the likes of Steve Petzel to advance.
Schuylkill River isn’t favored to finish too high in this tournament but they work well together and have some talent. Among those is Mark Eichner, the Kutztown University star who helped Daytona to a surprise finish last year. Will Knipscher provides some open field running skill.
And dark horses Tempe come in with players who have been there before – Rick Darrow and Jonathan Gray who won a DII XVs championship with Red Mountain, college all-star standout Peter Tiberio, USA 7s halfback Tai Enosa, and USA U20s Stevie Johnston and Ryan Thompson.
