The West Mustangs blasted the Pacific Coast early and held on to win the men’s National 7s All-Star Championships at Randall’s Island in New York City Sunday.

The Mustangs raced out to a 21-0 lead early against a Pacific Coast team that had been virtually untouchable defensively on Saturday. Their D was sorely tested on Sunday, with Northeast putting up 24, and then the West scoring tries from DeWon Reed, Spencer Scott and Mike Pelfau (all converted by Teddy Omondi) in the first half.

The Grizzlies replied with a try from Mike Nelson, who had an excellent weekend, with Jone Naqica’s conversion making it 21-7.

But it was always going to be an uphill climb for the Pacific Coasters, and even more so after Derek Wolfe scored and Omondi converted to make it 28-7.

Shane Moore’s two tries (one converted) made it closer, but the West prevailed 28-19.
