Denver - After an exciting weekend of 31 highly competitive rugby matches, the All-Star teams from Utah and Wisconsin prevailed and won the Rocky Mountain Challenge Championship in their respective age brackets at the Aurora Sport Park.
Utah won the U19 bracket with wins over Colorado and Nebraska on Saturday. On Sunday, they defeated Arizona 17-9 in the semifinals and won a convincing 31-0 victory over Texas in the championship match.
Wisconsin won the U17 championship with a 38-8 conquest of Texas. Wisconsin had advanced to the finals with pool play victories over Minnesota and Heart of America on Saturday.
According to Tournament Chairman Jeff Calhoun, this year’s Challenge was the best ever.
“I congratulate all the teams that played and especially Utah and Wisconsin,” said Calhoun. “We had an extremely competitive tournament this year, and it was a great experience. Our attendance was the best ever, and many people got a chance to watch rugby for the first time. We had local television coverage from FOX 31, Comcast and press coverage from the Aurora Sentinel.”
Calhoun continued, “We also appreciate all the efforts of the players, parents, coaches, team staff, who travelled many miles to participate. We also appreciate all of our
Sponsors for their generous contributions to the tournament. In addition, ERRFU, the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union, was a key supporter, as was USA Rugby, the National Rugby organization based in Boulder. Finally, I’d like to thank all our volunteers who worked so hard on behalf of the tournament, including the Denver Highlanders Football Club.”
The final team standings for the 2009 Rocky Mountain Challenge:
