June 2, 2009 – It’s June and that means U19 select side tournament time.

Tournaments have sprung up all over the country.

This past weekend, the U19 Grizzly Shield was held at Stanford University. Utah defeated Sacramento Valley in the final 24-14, with Kyle Sumsion taking the tournament MVP award. The tournament fielded the best players from Arizona, Oregon, California, Hawaii, and Utah.

What about the Girls?

For Girls the fifth-annual Western All-Star Championships will be held June 27-28. The tournament has been held throughout the Western USA, and this time stops in the Denver area.

Teams are expected from Colorado, Manitoba, Washington, Oregon, Northern California, Minnesota and Montana.

Previous tournament winners:
2005 Pacific Northwest
2006 Eastern Rockies
2007 Easter Rockies
2008 Washington

The tournament will wrap up with final games on Sunday at Infinity Park in Glendale under the watchful eye of USA High Performance Director Alex Williams.

On Saturday, June 27, athletes will be able to see the USA v. Canada women’s test match.

Pacific Coast RFU president Frank Merrill made a significant effort to include the Hawaii team in the tournament. Meanwhile Washington, which has produced several notable age-grade Eagles, opted not to participate.

June 13-14 will see the Rocky Mountain Challenge played once more at Aurora Sports Park in the Denver area.

All-Star teams from 12 states will travel to Colorado for this key regional tournament. USA Rugby CEO and former USA captain Andre Bachelet will speak at the tournament dinner.

The tournament will feature U19 and U17 boys teams.

Last year, Louisiana, won the U19 championship and Southern California was champion of the U17 bracket.

“It’s less than two weeks until the Ninth Annual Rocky Mountain Challenge,” said Tournament Director, Jeff Calhoun.  “We are really pleased with the number of teams coming to Colorado for the Tournament.  This is a great chance for Coloradans to see the Rugby Stars of the Future. This is a fun family outing.  Plus we’ve added two Exhibitions on Sunday, one for young rugby players (TRY) and one for older players.”

The Rocky Mountain Challenge is presented in partnership with the Denver Highlanders Rugby Football Club.
