May 29, 2009 - Coastal Carolina University’s Rugby Club has been suspended through Dec. 31, 2009.

The 2009 National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) Men’s Collegiate Division III champions were found guilty this spring of violating the university’s alcohol policy.

The club was given a suspension, which was deferred by the Student Government Association’s Judicial Board to allow them to finish the 2008-09 season.

All club sports are required to abide by the same policies as student organizations, including the alcohol and drug policy.

“We are taking our alcohol policy seriously,” said associate vice president for student affairs Haven Hart in a statement. “In the past year we have strengthened our policy for individual students and campus organizations. We are enforcing these policies to address the issues of alcohol abuse and binge drinking both on and off our campus. It will not be tolerated. We have an educational opportunity to help our students understand the consequences of their actions.“

In January 2010, the club will be eligible for reinstatement as a student organization.
