Penn State Rugby Camp and Academy

June 2, 2009, University Park, Pa- Fresh off another highly successful season for their program which brought a 5th National Championship for the women’s team, and a top 8 finish for the men’s team, the Penn State Rugby program has announced its 2009 Penn State Rugby Academy, to be held July 8-12.
Building on their highly successful winter clinics for High School girls and boys, this 5- day coed rugby academy takes the educational and athletic experience to the next level. Held on Penn State’s exquisite athletic facilities, this full blown PSU Sports Camp allows rugby athletes the very same opportunities and experiences that the attendees of any of the University’s 85 varsity sports camps receive.
Current and former players from both teams (including Eagles, All Americans, Super League and US Age Grade players) serve as coaches, and are a tremendous compliment to Penn State’s excellent coaching staffs and special invited guest coaches.
“The kids absolutely love working with the current players, and their ability to relate to, and inspire these young rugby players is a very big part of the success of our Academy,” said Asst. Director of Rugby and Women’s head coach Peter Steinberg.
With a low player to coach ratio and a 5 day format, the Penn State Rugby Academy truly provides campers with the attention and time needed to develop their skills, improve their understanding, and become better rugby players. Players are broken up by skill and age levels and are well schooled in the fundamentals of both general and positional play. This format makes the experience valuable for players new to the game, while allowing those with more experience the ability to learn advanced techniques, skills, and concepts that will challenge them, and progress their game as well.
Players also receive valuable information regarding strength and conditioning, flexibility, agility and nutrition, in addition to many of the very same PSU Rugby materials given to our players.
“Whether you are new to the game or have been playing for years, I promise you will get something out of this camp, and have a great time in the process,” said Director of Rugby and Men’s head coach Don Ferrell.
