May 16, 2009 – Just as predicted, the Divine Savor v. Summit quarterfinal was the closest and toughest game of the Girls U19 quarterfinals held Saturday in Pittsburgh.
Summit led 5-0 early before two tries by DSHA put them up 10-5. Summit managed a penalty kick near the end of the first half, but that was all the scoring, as DSHA held on 10-8. The second half was a defensive struggled played mostly within the 22s, with some massive hits on both sides.
“We had two defensive breakdowns and they are too good not to take advantage,” said a disappointed Summit head coach Karl Barth. “You could tell DSHA was surprised and weren’t used to the sort of pressure we put them under. It was a great game, as advertised. Lots of great players being forced to make tough decisions under pressure.”
South champs Maryville defeated West Carroll 22-5 to set up one semifinal.
In the other bracket, the Sacramento Amazons dominated Fullerton 46-5, and Lakewood shut out Rutland 22-0.
In the semifinals, DSHA held off a tenacious Maryville side 17-5. Summit moved to the 5th/6th game with a 14-0 shutout of West Carroll.
