May 5, 2009 - The Rutland U-19 Women’s rugby team defeated City Honors High School of Buffalo to advance to the Girls National Rugby Championships to be held in Pittsburgh, Pa. on May 16/17th.

A penalty kick from Isabel Furneaux and tries from Natasha Bruso, Emily Hugerth and Shayna McDonough powered the Vermont-based club to an 18-10 victory in the final of the Northeast Rugby Union Championships.

Rutland dominated possession and territory throughout the first half to post and 18-0 lead. However injuries to experienced Rutland players and a tactical change by City Honors had Rutland defending for long stretches of the second half.

Effective kicking by Furneaux helped her side relieve pressure and created several counter attacking opportunities, and Rutland held on for the win.

Rutland defeated Fairport, New York 5-0 and put on a clinic in brushing aside Union County of New Jersey 24-0 to advance to the Championship game. The Rutland team will play the #2 seed from the Midwest, Lakewood, in the first round of the National Championships.
