May 4, 2009 – The Sacramento Amazons won their second straight Pacific Coast girls U19 title with an exciting 24-10 defeat of Kent at the Redding Soccer Complex in Redding, Calif.
The final was a thriller, with Kent taking the lead twice – at 5-0 and 10-5, before the Amazons edged ahead 12-10 just before halftime.
Showcasing a very big, physical style that wore down the Kent team, the Amazons scored twice to take the title 24-10. It was the second straight for the Amazons, a team notable in part for the high percentage of honor students on their team.
In Saturday’s semifinal, Kent edged Mother Lode 5-0. The other semifinal was not played as Washington #2 Harbour was unable to attend, and the #3 team from Washington, Budd Bay, could not come either.
Certainly having to play two games in two days didn’t help Kent, who won the national title in 2002 and were finalists in 2005, ’06 and ’07.
