The BYU women’s team made a statement Saturday with a convincing 27-3 defeat of Colorado State in a friendly between two highly-ranked teams in Provo, Utah.

Women’s Cougar Rugby, ranked #4 by ERugbyNews, handled the tough forward pack of #8 CSU and ran in four tries in the victory.

BYU coach Tom Waqa praised the team, especially his center pairing of Star Bollinger and Kristi Jackson, who punched through the CSU line on several occasions and defended well when called upon.

Also playing a strong defensive game was Rebecca Bunnell at fullback.

“They have a very good pack,” said Waqa. “So we tried to play away from that and we sent it from sideline to sideline as much as we could. Our kicking game was also effective. It all worked out well.”

BYU is missing five starters due to study abroad and other reasons, but Waqa said “we have a good group of players and got a lot out of this game. We can build on this.”
