The Vassar women’s team emerged 24-15 winners in their season opener Saturday over SUNY New Paltz.

Vassar, normally ranked much higher than New Paltz, struggled a little as thye brought in some new players. One of their returners, Keri Peacock, was the scoring star, notching three tries and two conversions, while freshman Emma Backe scored a try as well.

“She most certainly deserves every score she gets for she tackles anything that moves and is all over the field,” said head coach Tony Brown of Peacock, his scrumhalf. But, he added, he was pleased with the effort level of his rookies.
