Belmont Shore and the San Diego Surfers both moved to 2-0 in the women’s DI Competitive Region 1 club league.
Eight of the nine teams in the West Coast league played games Saturday. Belmont Shore downed previously 2-0 NorCal Triple Threat 15-10.
In a very physical game played on a hot afternoon, the Triple Threat did well to slow the game down and use their forwards.
Both teams were in scoring position in the first half, but decent defense and the occasional dropped pass prevented the score until at the 30th minute Belmont center Jill Whitfield (a former Michigan DII All American) broke the line and scored for a 5-0 lead.
Both teams struggled to keep up the pace in the heat. At 50th minute the Belmont backs pressured on defense, turned the ball over, and former Stanford All American Mel Smit picked it up and ran 40 meters to score under the posts. Regina Sheck’s conversion made it 12-0.
NorCal replied with a try from Jessica Perreira, and Sharon Morales’s conversion made it 12-7 with time winding down.
Both teams had a shot to put the game away but could not. Finally Sheck hit a penalty goal to make it 15-7 and ensure a win for Belmont Shore, and no close-loss bonus points for NorCal.

Elsewhere in DI competition around the country, the Black Ice v. Kansas City challenge match was cancelled. Atlanta beat Philadelphia 31-21 to join NOVA at 1-0 in the East (CR3) league.
