May 13, 2009 – Taking a break from rugby doesn’t have to mean taking it easy, as Jonathan Gray, Aaron Hentges and Rick Darrow showed this past weekend.

Gray, who was a member of Red Mountain RFC and now plays for the Albuquerque Aardvarks, and Darrow and Hentges, still Red Mountain players, made up 3/4 of Team Versus, which competed in the 2009 Drambuie Pursuit. The Pursuit is an adventure race in Scotland mapped out to mimic Bonnie Prince Charlie’s flight from the English following the Battle of Culloden in 1745.

Racers run, bike, swim, paddle and crawl their way over the Scottish Highlands for the prize. Gray and Darrow joined Aaron Hentages and film actor Huntley Ritter on Team Versus.

The team finished 5th and Gray, Hentges and Darrow escaped with no injuries – a good thing since they will be playing against each other this weekend in the DII club playoffs. Plenty of bruised egos thanks to the pre-playoff mind games, but no other problems.

it was a close thing, since Hentges and Darrow’s canoe almost sank at one point.

“It was a great experience for all of us and one last hard training to get us in shape before we play each other,” said Gray. “There was a lot of trash talking as well as subtly trying to get information out of each other. I'm looking forward to seeing those guys in Austin.”
