Davenport Starts Life in Varsity Rugby
Saturday Sep 5, 2009 in Amateur Competitions Division II Colleges
Davenpport University of Grand Rapids, Mich. began its existence as a varsity rugby program Saturday, taking on Wayne State in their first varsity game.
The program was proposed last winter by Ron Falk, employee at DU for last 18 years, and avid rugby fan. Backed by Athletic Director Paul Lowden (also head coach for Davenport’s repeat D2 National Champion Hockey team), who built an athletic program including 24 men’s and women’s teams in 16 sports in five years, the rugby team took the field.
The result was a 100-0 shut out of Wayne State. Wing Dan Norris was virtually unstoppable as Davenport spread the ball wide. Norris scored three tries in the first nine minutes to help stake Davenport to a 26-0 lead, and he added two more in the first half.
The game was ended early but Davenport had made their point.
In three weeks Davenport makes its home opener at the school’s brand new, $14 million athletic facility against Calvin College.
