With Penn State and Delaware not playing league games, Navy and Kutztown looked for the opportunity to move up in the Mid-Atlantic College Premier League this week.

Navy downed Virginia 39-3 after a slow first half.

“In the first half we were very ordinary,” said Navy head coach Mike Flanagan. And the score showed it, as the teams entered the break with Navy leading just 5-3. “We were just being a bit careless, committing penalties we didn’t need to commit and dropping balls. Once they tightened up, the boys did a really good job.”

Navy exploded for six tries in the second half. And the score might have been more except that the Middies’ main goalkicker, Jake Cole, incurred an injury during warmups and didn’t play.

No. 8 Kyle Magnuson and flanker Sean Rohrs scored key tries and first-year player Taylor Hamilton also touched down at a clutch moment.

“The pack really asserted itself in the second half, and Taylor, I was glad to see how he put himself into the game,” said Flanagan. “Overall I was more happy that the team found themselves in the second half.”

Also weathering an iffy first half was Kutztown, which started their game against Maryland a little banged up, and entered the halftime break up 15-5. In the second half with hooker Chris Pettine and wing Kerry Fryberger both scoring twice the Golden Bears ran away with it 48-10.

“It was an improvement,” said KU head coach Doc Jones. “But we are a work in progress.”

Also in the MARFU Premiership, Virginia Tech edged Rutgers 19-15 in a game that was tight all the way. Rutgers got two tries from flyhalf Evan Fitzgerald, but couldn’t get their kicks over.

With this weekend’s results, Navy moves to 2-0 and leads the Premiership. Penn State and Delaware all have a game in hand.
