MIddlesex Barbarians 2-0 on Promotion
Sunday Sep 13, 2009 in Amateur Competitions Division II Clubs
The Middlesex Barbarians made it 2-0 in their first season in New England’s DII club league, as they defeated Worcester 19-0 Saturday.
The game was played in pouring rain on a football field, giving neither team much traction or room to mount an attack. The Barbarians, who like to spin it, were bottled up, but bottled up Worcester fairly well, too.
UMass Lowell product Matt Johnson and Wake Forest grad Matt Gottbrecht led the team in the backs and the forwards, respectively, while the Barbarians got tries from John Meehan, James Bremis and Danny Mullane.
“It was a tough game,” said Josh Smith of Middlesex. “We weren’t able to play the game we wanted.”
Still, the promoted DIII club is unbeaten in New England’s DII competition.
Also Saturday, the Hartford Wanderers and Burlington tied 22-22. Both teams are now 1-0-1.
