Hartford, Provide and Burlington all emerged winners in the opening weekend of DII club rugby in New England.

Providence, which had made a national playoff run last season but were hit by player relocations and retirements, had expected a rocky start, and got it. They won, but by only a point 23-22 over Boston’s Charles River.

Burlington downed Worcester 22-5, while Hartford were convincing winners over Portland 32-0.

“Our goal, as I'm sure every team’s is, is a win with bonus point,” said Hartford coach Daniel Dionne. “I'm happy that Hartford achieved this especially with our first match. On the other hand, there were some aspects of our play that I found troubling and I know many of the players felt they didn't necessarily play up to their potential.”

Dionne said Portland did not travel strong but put up a tough physical battle. The Wanderers, like all the other teams, have two weeks to prepare for the next match.

Everyone else, that is, except Middlesex and Old Gold. That game has been moved to Thursday night.

Newport was idle.
