Denver Rugby (Highlanders) played Boulder in a friendly at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Denver with the hosts emerging comfortable winners 59-8.

With both sides due to meet again in league play in October, this was a chance to make a statement. Enjoying most of the possession with Jon Taylor dominant in the lineout, the Highlanders cruised to a 31-3 halftime lead with two tries from Will Stroope and scores also from John McQuade, Eric Landauer and Clinton Camp with three Leif Gibson conversions.

After the break Boulder scored first on a long kick-and-chase to make it 31-8 but then the Highlanders reasserted themselves with tries from Ryan Diehl, Jonathan Taylor, Taylor  Howden and Doug James all converted by Gibson. Howden was also given player of the game honors as he controlled the game from flyhalf, kicking well from hand, and breaking the line at will.

Next up for the Highlanders is trip to Aspen for the annual Ruggerfest tournament.

Meanwhile Denver (Queen City) defeated the Boulder B-side 34-0 and Denver Rugby’s new Academy XV (Under-23) made its first appearance at the Jackalope Tournament going 1-2 under head coach Geraint Benyon.
