Liberty Cup Celebrates Heroes
Sunday Aug 23, 2009 in Elite Level Rugby All-Stars
Saturday at Randall’s Island in New York, concurrent with the National All-Star 7s, the first Liberty Cup will be played among four teams representing the military and New York’s emergency services.
The event was born out of the rubble of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Members of the Army, NYPD and other organizations found a common bond in the risks and responsibilities they face, and they expressed it through sports.
In 2007 the first game between Bragg Army RFC and the NYPD was played, won by Bragg 27-7 in Fayetteville North Carolina.
Since then, the event has grown and now includes the NYPD, Fire Department of New York, Fort Bragg, and the US Marines.
The event is free and open to the public Kickoff is 1pm.
