The Ontario mens rugby team takes the field for their first meaningful home game in over a dozen years as the host the Prairie Wolfpack at Fletchers Fields, Markham  on Saturday at 3 pm.

Reborn as “The Blues” and playing in the newly minted Americas Rugby Championship,( featuring teams from Canada, the USA and Argentina), Ontario lost a 29-24 nail-biter to the favored BC Bears in Vancouver last Saturday and need a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

“The guys are very excited to be able to play at home, finally, after six months of hard work” said Ontario head coach Les Gilson, “and we know it will be a battle with some solid players in the Prairies team.”

The Wolfpack lost at home to the Atlantic Rock 31-23 last week but feature several current national team players in Nanyak Dala, Andrew Tiedemann and Brampton native Ryan Smith.

The Blues, fielding a young team with an average age of less than 24, are captained by Dan Pletch, veteran of many national team contests and one of twins from Lucan, Ontario.

The team played a pre-season game against the Midwest USA in Indiana, winning 38-5, before travelling to Vancouver last weekend, and team general manager Mark Winokur is happy to be back on familiar ground.

“We have been bouncing around pretty much the last month, and it will be great to have the program here before our fans both young and old” he said “the first two games of the competition were amazing and we can’t wait to show the product to everyone back home”
