Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei - It was a rough day of pool play for a largely inexperienced USA 7s team at the World Games.

The Eagles lost all three matches, including a disappointing 22-17 decision to Chinese Taipei that highlighted the fact that almost the entire squad has played only two tournaments before this one, and five have never played for the USA 7s team before.

In the opening round Portugal scored four tries in downing the USA 22-7. Blaine Scully scored the USA’s only try.

Then came the loss to Chinese Taipei – Scully scoring once more and Jason Pye adding two. But Wang Jen-His scored two for the host country to help his side to the victory.

They then took on mighty South Africa, and were creditable in a 26-7 loss.

Pool A
Fiji 26-10 Hong Kong
Argentina 15-5 Japan
Fiji 19-10 Japan
Argentina 31-0 Hong Kong
Fiji 7-17 Argentina
Japan 20-5 Hong Kong

Pool B
South Africa 29-0 Chinese Taipei
USA 7-22 Portugal
South Africa 7-5 Portugal
USA 17-22 Chinese Taipei
South Africa 26-7 USA
Portugal 19-5 Chinese Taipei

Saturday sees the quarterfinals, with all teams still in it, so a change of fortunes could help any team.

Saturday matchups:
A1: Argentina v B4: USA
A3: Japan v B2: Portugal
B3: Chinese Taipei v A2: Fiji
B1: South Africa v A4: Hong Kong
