Saracens held off a late onslaught by London Irish to record a narrow victory in the opening match of Saturday's Twickenham double-header in front a massive crowd in England’s flagship rugby stadium.

Sarries took an 18-3 lead into the break thanks to a try, conversion and two penalties by Glen Jackson, and another touchdown by Andy Saull. A below-par Irish side fought back in the second half but, despite George Stowers' try and penalties by Ryan Lamb and Delon Armitage, they could not complete the comeback.

USA wing Chris Wyles started in the game and helped set up one try.

With the score 13-3 after 34 minutes Alex Goode and then Wyles sliced up the London Irish defense, and that attack produced a try for Saull off a Jackson kick

That made it 18-3 and it looked like Saracens romp, but the Irish came back with two penalties and a try to make it close, 18-14.

The game came to a close with Irish down to 14 and Saracens downt o 13 due to yellow cards.
