USA U17s Picked for Millfield

February 18, 2009 - The USA U17 Rugby Squad has been named to represent the United States in the 2009 Millfield International Tournament this upcoming April at the Millfield School in England.
The squad of 26 is made up of some of the best 15- and 16-year-old players that the USA has to offer. The team is comprised of players from across the US, as well as some based in Ireland, England and Indonesia, and coaches said selections were very difficult with a strong pool of candidates.
The squad will take off for England on March 27, 2009 and will spend the first nine days at The Bryanston School where they will prepare for the tournament by training and playing two warmup games against South West England and either Leinster, Munster or Spain.
Once at Millfield the USA will open against neighbors and rivals Canada on Tuesday, April 7. A strong France side will be the U17s’ next opponent on Thursday, April 9. And on Sunday, April 13 the USA U17s will take on Belgium to finish play in the tournament.
The squad has been preparing long and hard for this tournament. Thirty-six players met in the summer of 2008 at the Elkhart, Ind. rugby complex where they spent a week going through a skills camp with some of the best coaches from not only around the country but around the world.
After a hard and successful summer camp, head coach Sean O’Leary, asked David Williams, USA Rugby’s Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, to implement a training regimen challenging the players to come back in even better rugby shape to the winter camp at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.
The players not only showed the obvious visual improvement but it was also reflected in fitness testing and skills work. The players worked hard at three-a-day training sessions during their Winter Break from school. This paid off at the end of camp when they played a South Select Side and won convincingly 25-10.
After only two camps together, this group is proving to be something special, says coaches. Selections for the traveling 26 were extremely difficult. The side traveling to England is still working hard at improving their fitness levels before reassembling overseas. They know the challenge that lies before them is not going to be easy but this group has worked hard and sacrificed a lot to represent the USA Rugby Community in International Competition.
